Parent Code of Ethics

As a YATA parent or guardian, I commit to:

Celebrate the accomplishments of all students, recognizing that each contributes meaningfully to the production.
Encourage growth, effort, and learning and avoid comparisons or competitive commentary between students.
Recognize that every student contributes to the success of a production.

Speak about and interact with students, families, directors, staff, and volunteers with kindness, respect, and professionalism
Refrain from gossip, rumor-spreading, public criticism, or conversations, online or in person, that diminish others or their abilities.
Avoid comparing students or discussing casting, roles, or opportunities in ways that create division or undermine the educational mission within the community.
Raise questions or concerns privately and through appropriate channels rather than through speculation or public discussion.
Address concerns directly, privately, and constructively with YATA leadership, using established communication protocols.
Remember that children learn from the examples set by adults; model the respect, empathy, and professionalism we expect from our students.
Actively contributes to a culture where every family feels welcomed, valued, and supported.
Use social media in ways that reflect the values of YATA, protecting student privacy and avoiding negative commentary about casting, production decisions, or other families.
Support YATA’s mission and reputation.
Remember that children are watching and learning from the behavior of the adults around them.

Understand that casting and production decisions are made with the best interests of the production and educational mission in mind and may not be discussed publicly.
Support directors and staff as they make artistic and educational decisions, even when those decisions differ from personal expectations.
Address concerns directly and respectfully through appropriate channels.

Value the lessons, relationships, and experiences gained through participation over roles, awards, or recognition.
Understand that theatre education is about personal development, collaboration, and growth – not solely on receiving roles or awards.

Violations of this Code of Ethics may result in:
